Start Point: Killiney, Q 575 098
This walk encompasses four mountain tops: Stradbally Mountain, Beenoskee, An Com Bán and Binn an Tuair. It allows tremendous views over Brandon Bay to the north and equally fine views to the south over Dingle Bay and the Iveragh Peninsula.
The walk starts from the townland of Killiney on the Dingle to Tralee Road R560. Access to the walk is via a gateway to a forest and the first three kilometres is on forest tracks. Leaving the forest track behind at 250m we gain height and progress on to open mountain via a spur running from Stradbally Mountain towards Arraglen.
After about two hours climbing we reach the first high point of the day, Stradbally Mountain at 798 m. Moving on from the summit we descend 40 m over rocky ground before again climbing another 70m towards our next high point, Beenoskee and the highest point of the day at 826 m. The halfway point for the walk and time for lunch!
Heading in a NW direction, we lose 266 m descending over boggy ground before reaching our third high point, An Com Bán at 610 m. A short descent to a coll before the last climb of the day (60 m) to Binn an Tuair at 592 m. With views to Gleann na hUamha we turn south to commence the steep descent (272 m) into Macha na Bó.
Having reached the ford known as the “Wolf’s Step” at 270m we follow the river to the valley floor, loosing another 200 m. The final hour is a pleasant walk through the valley to the main road and back to our cars at An Baile Dubh.
